I'm so curious—will users be able to edit iPhone data/cards on a desktop computer?
At the moment it is not possible as we have focused on more basic features such as learning and creating users' courses. However, we have started our work to synchronize SuperMemo UX with supermemo.net and further with SuperMemo iPhone application. Thus, it will be possible to transfer data and synchronize learning between these systems in the next edition of SuperMemo iPhone application.
I have downloaded the iphone app and made my first card. You can email yourself each card, and cut an copy but it is very laborous. Still it works. I have about 5,000 cards that I would like to be able to port over, so I will be waiting and checking frequently for an update on how to get the data from the computer to the iphone in a batch process. Great that you have gotten this far! Kind Regards, Arthur
However, I have an iPod Touch, which cannot use the program because it requires a microphone (which personally I don't need)...
I installed SuperMemo for iPhone on my iPod Touch and it works perfectly. All you need is perhaps an upgrade to OS 3.

I have OS3 on my iTouch. When I try downloading Supermemo for iPhone, I get a message saying that the program is incompatible with the iTouch.
We have tested it on iPod Touch 3rd gen with OS3.1 and it works like a charm. Make sure you have latest OS installed.
The problem (which exists only on 1st gen iPod Touch) has been solved several months ago. Now you can use SuperMemo app on all iOS-running devices (of course you must have at least iOS 3.0 installed).
I am a supermemo enthusiast and like to transfer 70000 elements from the desktop version to ipod. I dont mind compromising learning process. My questions is - is there a limitation on the no of items we can have on ipod?
Secondly, how efficient is the supermemo app in terms of retention as compoared to the supermemo 2008 (minus additional options).
Is there a difference in the way repetations are scheduled. Any additional randomness like UX is added to calculate the repetations.?
Wow, 70000 is huge number of items!
There are following limitations on courses on SuperMemo for iPhone:
- courses can have maximum 1000 items at root level of the course
- you can create chpaters (which are considered as single item) which can have 1000 items inside it. Chapters can have subchapters, etc.
- courses can have maximum 6 levels (i.e. 6 levels of chapter hierarchy)
For example, at the root level of your course you can create 70 chapters, among which you can split these 70000 items.
One thing, that can cause problems is the size of the course itself (if you have all these 70000 items in one course). I am afraid that Q&A import / export mechanism in SuperMemo for iPhone could not cope with such a big course. But you may try to import the course to supermemo.net and then synchronize it to SuperMemo for iPhone - since synchronization of content comes in batches it should not be a problem.
Just let's give it a try
Considering your second question - I must ask someone else (with proper knowledge). I can only tell that the same randomness like on UX is added to calculate repetitions interval in SuperMemo for iPhone.
SuperMemo for iPhone is based on SM-8 algorithm. SuperMemo 2002 and newer are based on SM-11. SM-8 has lower requirements and therefore SM for iPhone uses this algorithm. The main difference is that algorithm SM-11 eliminates problems with repetition delay and repetition advancement. There is no difference in retension.
- Is the root inclusive of 6 levels of hierarchy? that is 1000 items within these 6 levels.(subchapters and further subchapters)?
-When you say 70 chapters does that mean- the course will split in the supermeo app.
-For Ex - Indian history as a course will then become 2 courses; according to my understanding - indian history - 1 and indian history -2( what ever names i give).
-In my PC i have categories set up - for ex ; indian history - then sub chapters in indian history has 200 or more items.
-In a Similar way i have numerous categories.( possibly 16 or so with varied no of items under each category)
-Since, the limitation of one course in iphone is 1000 items. Should i prepare categories in such a manner, where one category(course) has1000 items) and then sync via supermemo.net?
SM-8 is a great choice considering we dont have any advanced options on the iphone.
But, i believe priority queue will be great if implemented in a simple fashion.
Great Work guys. The support here is invaluable.
I like to(Import) organize my knowledge from PC into 5 courses in ipod as follows -
Course 1 - General Stuff - 25000 items.
Course 2 - Psychology - 18,000 odd items.
Course 3 - Administration - 17,000 odd items.
Course 4 - News and Articles - 23,000 items.
-------------- The above 4 courses must be imported into ipod from my PC via Supermemo.net using UX(Dont mind loosing learnng process)----------------------
Course 5 - I like to download the spanish course from supermemo.net.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a fairly organized knowledge tree in my pc. Will it be replicated in the iphone after transfer?
If it does not - What are my chances of organizing the knowledge in the above mentioned style(having 5 courses each with so many items).
Is it possible to have 25000 items in a course in supermemo app?
( I am sorry, but i dint quite understand the 1000 items per root which u articulated in your last post).
Please clarify.
