I've been using SuperMemo for more than five years and have always been perfectly satisfied with it but I came across a strange thing a couple of days ago. When I learn NEW MATERIAL and choose "I DON'T KNOW" SuperMemo sets the repetition interval as if I chose "I know" and shows a red smily face. For instance, when I was learning new material in the couse “Phrasal verbs”, I chose “I DON’T KNOW” and SuperMemo set the repetition interval to 10 days.
I would be very grateful if you could look into the problem.
This behaviour is perfectly OK. On first memorizing your mark is NOT regarded by the system. It is only used to place the item in Final Drill, in case you mark yourself "don't know" or "almost". In other words SuperMemo always assumes that you do not know the item before you memorize it. The first interval is calculated from your individual learning data. Differences between repetition intervals for different items result from the fact that SuperMemo tests deviations from the current optimum interval all the time.
Thank you for your prompt reply.
